Backyard chickens and animal husbandry

Backyard (domesticated) chickens are allowed for personal use within the City, and up to 10 female chickens per lot are allowed. Roosters are only allowed in zoning districts that allow agricultural uses, which includes the RS-20 and RR districts.

Although a permit is not required, zoning standards for domestic chickens are established within Durham's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). Any violation of UDO rules for backyard chickens would be subject to enforcement action under Article 15, Enforcement, of the UDO.

Additional requirements for backyard chickens relate to required hours for enclosure; pen design, location, and maintenance; and waste disposal. These standards can be found via the link below:
